Dil and Cath Belworthy met right outside what is now their Original Retail outlet in the Islands only Village of Oban (pop.350). Dil was working as a Fisherman and Cath was 'just visiting' the furthest place on Earth from her English home. For the next 13 years they lived on Rakiura / Stewart Island raising two beautiful children and founding Glowing Sky.
In 1997 we started hand printing T-Shirts on the kitchen table of our tiny cottage. They proved so popular we had to shift to a bigger house and set up a printing studio and shop in our basement. Then we started selling to shops all around N.Z. Dil gave up fishing and for the next few years Cath, Dil and team went hard out printing!
Keeping it local
In 2006 we started to 'play around' with fabrics made from our local Southern Alpine Superfine Merino Wool. Demand was instantly so crazy that within a year we had to stop making T's altogether to focus 100% on Merino. Now days our dedicated South Island manufacturing team supply exclusively to our website, 6 shops, and counting...
N.Z. Merino Sheep have evolved a unique wool that manipulates moisture to perfectly adapt to an environment that can be blisteringly hot during the day and freezing cold at night. Turns out humans wearing this wool get exactly the same benefits. We proudly use only the premium natural, renewable, bio-degradable, sustainable ZQ Merino Wool supplied by our friends at The NZ Merino company.
Merino wool comes from a special kind of sheep living in an extreme habitat. Grazing on the steepest mountains, surrounded by snow in winter and dry heat in summer. They are truly tough. The farms in which these sheep live are some of the most spectacular and beautiful in The World and it takes expert and rugged farmers to keep the sheep and the environment in perfect condition.
