Funding
2003/2004
Work this season has relied predominantly on volunteers. An approximate cost for the project over the last season is outlined in Table 1. This is an underestimation as a portion of volunteer hours have not been recorded.
Table 1: Approximated cost of project from July 2003 to June 2004.

A successful funding application to the Biodiversity Condition and Advice Fund has resulted in
$87000 worth of funding over two years. This funding will enable the purchase of further traps and the
employment of a project officer for two years.
Further funding streams should be sought to purchase a GPS, laptop, vehicle and other required field
equipment. A sign outlining the trust’s work should be developed for near the donation box on
Ackers Point.
The project aims to be self-funding within five years. Stewart Island has a growing tourism industry
that is largely focussed on environmental pursuits. This provides a growing market to which we can
sell this project, possibly via a sponsor a hectare package that links in with a web-site and
newsletter. Donations are also expected to grow as awareness increases through marketing. All
revenue will be fed back to the trust to fund the project.
If the project is not self-funding within five years then we have failed in one of our principal aims.
